CloseAttachment theory suggests that children need strong relationships with their primary carers and that this relationship or bond begins in the first few months of a baby's life. For most babies this will be with their mother or father. It is generally accepted that those children who do not have a strong bond with a primary carer may find it difficult to socialise and develop relationships with others in the future. Where a baby or child is not with their primary carer, it is important that they received good quality consistent loving care. John Bowlby was one of the first people to recognise the needs of babies and young children. this, together with other theorists work is explored in all level 3 (or above) full qualification training, eg NVQ 3, Childrens Care, Learning and Development award. Signposting to local Further Education Provider and advice/guidance from Local Authority.
Babies develop a strong bond with their primary carer, who is usually their mother (or mother figure), but need to also bond with others in order to develop emotionally and socially. Babies therefore can bond with several people, including parents, grandparents and carers, but not easily with more than that.
